Hengxu International Hotel & Complex designed by Yushe Design is located in Lingang Economic and Technological Development Zone in Yibin City, Sichuan Province. Constructed on 122,550-square-meter area, the complex wanted to resemble the ‘faraway mountains and nearby water’ around the area, echoing Yibin’s identity as Shan-Shui city known by its mountainous terrain and the first city on Yangtze River. The building makes a great and dynamic addition to the city.
The complex comprises 22 stories and 384 guest rooms. The main towers are functioned as a five-star hotel with unique sculptural form interpreted from Chinese traditional culture of ‘Shan-Shui’ meaning high mountain and flowing water.
For the commercial complex and villa areas, those are layered in sinuous organic forms based on the native natural shape of rock and mountain.
The form of the main tower resembles the Chinese ideograph “山” (‘Shan’ in pinyin) which means mountain. There’s the glass curtain wall decorated with a ribbed stainless steel bar, representing a dynamic parametric simulation of the flowing water.
The design team also designed distinctive elements to respond to the Shan-Shui concept, such as the robust of slot-cut stone which was neutralized by reflective glass and slight.
The reflective surfaces catch the changing palette of natural light, presenting varying visions from different angles. Overall, these features provide innovative regionalism to the building’s contributions to the city, bestowing the Hengxu International Hotel as the ‘name card’ of the city.
The flowing water concept is emphasized by the ‘waterfall’ flowing down from the canopy high above the hotel entrance which is gathered by a rainwater collection system. Once entering the hotel, visitors will feel as if they step on a scroll of landscape painting. Just like the exterior design, the interior of the hotel also utilizes Shan-Shui concept. There’s the free-form pendant lamp across the whole lobby with mesmerizing 16-meter high space. It’s like an allusion of a flowing river.
A masculine aesthetic seems to dominate the lobby and reception area, however, the existence of elegant and solid materials like bronze and marble helps to tone down the masculinity and complements the feminine element as seen through the silky pendant white yellow golden veining in the marble. In addition, fixtures, furniture, and materials used in the adjacent lounge offer the balance for the entire décor.
Following the five-star hotel standard, the guest rooms are designed with clean lines and warm woods. Artwork featured in Shan-Shui painting is also incorporated into the design in order to highlight Shan-Shui city spirit.
The collaboration between form, material, and technology has played an important role in the entire design of the Hengxu International Hotel and Complex. The design elements fused together to deliver a deeper primordial response in a contemporary way.
