Paul Kaloustian Architects was appointed to design the COAF Smart Center, a pioneering model for accommodating regional-relevant and superior social, economic, educational, and community programs in Armenia’s rural areas. Situated in Lori Province, Armenia, the COAF Smart Center is a state of the art cultural center adopting a modern building architecture. The building emphasizes sustainability and technology with the combination of modern healthcare and lifestyle, business and civic engagement, linguistics and languages as well as arts and music.
The building design paid attention to architecture and its relation with nature, allowing a different view of architecture and the void. Therefore, the surrounding landscape is deemed as the heart of the project where the program is organized around it, creating a new reading of the built environment as a new nature.
Adopting the SMART concept, this state of the art cultural center will respect the integrity of rural aesthetics in relation to modern architectural design while maintaining the region authenticity and supporting its progressive ideology. Consisted of several smart campuses, the building prioritizes green design and sustainability.
When it comes to the landscape and nature, the architecture team utilizes a new architecture approach in order to engage with the scale of the landscape. This is done by creating a form that cocoons the surrounding, delivering an environment more than a building. The organic form of the structure aligns with the landscape or the topography by producing a sinuous ribbon-like walkway to create a 7000-meter-square courtyard.
Meanwhile, the COAF Smart Center houses a world class from global influencers across the interconnected virtual classrooms, computer labs for student and youth clubs, meeting areas, a library and studios for languages, arts, and music, an auditorium for presentations and performances, and a restaurant.
There are also guest quarters to accommodate program participants and visiting collaborators. The spaces will come with indoor workshops, outdoor activities, and greenhouses to train and allow developing children and adult’s skills in accordance with their regions.
